A taxi driver who weighed more than 31 stone has found the key to success after a passenger passed on her slimming secrets.

Andy Fish, of Holystone, piled on the pounds after his mother, Freda, died five years ago.

Literally from day one I have tuned my life around. The first week I lost 13lb and I haven’t looked back since

He worked his way through junk food and beer, not realising he was depressed.

Then he picked up a fare who changed his life, with Jackie sharing her stories on Slimming World – taking him to Ruth Branthwaite’s group at Kings Priory School, Tynemouth.

Andy said: “Literally from day one I have tuned my life around. The first week I lost 13lb and I haven’t looked back since.”

Andy lost 8st 10lb in just eight months.

Meanwhile mum of two Mandy Powell lost 8st 7lb between April 2012 and last September.

Mandy, 50, has the rare Proteus Syndrome, a condition which involves atypical bone growth and other symptoms.

“I was 17.3 stone when I joined group and I was on a lot of blood pressure medication,” Mandy said.

“But my blood pressure has gone right down and I have gained so much confidence.”

Mandy, who has dropped seven dress sizes from a 24 to a size 10, can now shop in the same fashionable stores as her daughter, Drew.

“I lost a lot of years but I’m more confident now and I feel like my life is just starting over. Getting rid of that weight – you wouldn’t believe how different I feel,” she said.

Ruth said, “Mandy and Andy have had fantastic weight loss results since they joined Slimming World and they have totally transformed their lives. I am immensely proud of how well they have done and their weight loss stories inspire and motivate other members in group.”

Andy, who has been ‘Slimmer of the Week’ 15 times and declared the group’s ‘Greatest Loser’, added: “I feel like my life went on hold when my mam passed away but now I’m resuming everything.”
