A teenager from the borough has been honoured for her contribution as a Northumbria Police cadet.

Drew Powell, from North Shields, was honoured at North Tyneside Council’s Commendation Awards and Young Person’s Commendation Scheme.

The 15-year-old was nominated by her cadet leader, Pc Paul McKenzie, who felt she should be rewarded.

Drew joined the cadets last year and has since achieved her bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award, impressing her fellow cadets and mentors.

She also volunteers at ‘The Tuesday Club’ at John Spence Community High School.

Pc McKenzie, from Whitley Bay neighbourhood policing team, said: “Drew is always the first person to volunteer her services and no matter what the task she does her best every time.

“I am absolutely over the moon for her and she fully deserves this award.

“I hope this accolade gives her the encouragement and confidence to go on and achieve many more accomplishments in her life.”
