Three people were taken to hospital after a police car on an emergency call hit another vehicle in Whitley Bay.

The incident happened at 10.33pm on Tuesday, August 18, at the traffic lights on Earsdon Road, near the entrance to West Park.

The police vehicle, which had been responding to an incident in Whitley Bay, collided with a Nissan Juke.

The police car came to rest on its side on top of pedestrian barriers.

Two fire crews from Fossway and South Shields stations were also on scene, with firefighters spending 20 minutes cutting free the female driver in the Nissan Juke.

The woman and two police officers were taken to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary for treatment.

The road was closed for more than four hours while investigations were carried out, and the debris removed.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to the crash.
