Time to stand up against yet another big rise in rail fares

AS a Tyne and Wear group that covers about 14 organisations covering all forms of transport, we are totally opposed to the new introduction of fare rises by all the major rail companies, which have been allowed by the present government.

This has happened at a time of so-called austerity, but yet the vast profits of these rail companies’ shareholders are being maintained at the expense of the ordinary travelling public.

Many of those rail travellers will now no longer be able to afford the already high fares, which will mean misery for many not being able to travel and visit families.

And in addition especially those who have to work away from their families in Tyne and Wear and commute back at weekends.

Train fare comparisons highlight the scale of the gap between rail fares in the five biggest European capitals; Italian commuters pay a tenth of the UK price, while the French have the second most expensive fares and yet still only pay less than a third of the fares paid by passengers in the UK.

If this was not bad enough, UK rail fares have risen above inflation again this new year, and government policy means even steeper rises in 2013 and 2014.

By 2015 our fares will be 24 per cent higher than in 2011.

UK rail fare rises are a scandal and it’s time passengers stood up and had their voices heard.
