TORCHBEARERS were given a warm welcome in Wallsend this afternoon as the Olympic torch came through the town.
Hundreds of people turned out in the rain to watch the flame come through the borough on its last stop before heading to Newcastle.
Torchbearer Stephen George, from Killingworth, said: “I am so delighted to be here and to be running through Wallsend, but it’s very surreal.”
Stephen was nominated for his work coaching judo for ten years on a voluntary basis at Wallsend Judo Club, Westgate Judo Club and at North Shields YMCA.
“I’ve coached some challenging kids, with some great successes,” he said, “It has given them greater confidence, they smile and laugh more and it has helped them interect with others. It really makes a difference to their lives.
“Being an Olympic Torch Bearer means the world to me – it’s a dream come true, an incredble experience.”
