ROADWORKS that have been causing hold-ups in the heart of Whitley Bay for over a month are set to come to an end this week.
A stretch of road at the junction of Park View and Norham Road has been dug up for weeks while urgent repairs to a gas main were carried out.
The work has led to lengthy traffic jams in both directions at busy times of day.
A spokesperson for Northern Gas Networks confirmed that works to the gas main are now complete.
She added: “A team is now reinstating the road surface, and it’ll be back to normal by the end of the week.
“We would like to offer our apologies once again for any inconvenience experienced during this work, but it was essential that we carried out a full repair as a matter of urgency to ensure the continued safe and reliable supply of gas.”
The repair work has required the use of high-tech camera equipment to explore the inside of the gas main in order to identify the cause of the problem.
Northern Gas Networks area operations manager Ian Waddle said: “We understand that this is a sensitive location, but this work is vital to ensuring the gas supply is safe.
“We never take chances when it comes to safety. We cannot leave until we are certain that the gas main is safely repaired.”
Northern Gas Networks owns and manages around 37,000km of gas main across the region.
It also runs the region’s gas emergency response service, attending reports of suspected gas leaks 24 hours a day.
