A popular local musician has penned a specially written song for this year’s Whitley Bay Carnival, which organisers hope will be heard for years to come.

Graham Hardy, member of Northern Monkey Brass Band, has written Lovely Day in Whitley Bay, which will be debuted at the town carnival on Saturday, May 28.

The song will be sung to mark the start of the carnival celebration. A number of local choirs are expected to come together for the first time to sing the song, while all the different bands taking part in the parade will provide the musical accompaniment.

Lovely Day in Whitley Bay, which depicts the fun that is to be had in the seaside town, pays homage to both the past and the present; references to smiling children building sandcastles and paddling in the sea are as relevant today as they were during the town’s heyday.

Organisers are hoping the 800 schoolchildren and community group members taking part in the parade, as well as all those coming along to watch, will also join in with the singing.

Creative producer Carol Alevroyianni, once again organising the carnival, said: “When I first heard the song played and sung I felt really quite emotional.

“The words and the music really do depict what a special place Whitley Bay is – not only for those of us who live here, but for the many visitors to the town too.

“The carnival is a real community event and there are opportunities for anyone who wants to be part of it to come along and join in.

“We have been overwhelmed by the number of people coming along to the workshops – whether to be part of the brass band or helping to make costumes – and our new carnival song will just help to bring everyone together.”

Jess Burns, chairman of Whitley Bay Big Local, which has once again lent its backing to the carnival, added: “When Big Local decided to resurrect the once popular town carnival back in 2014 we were confident that it would help to bring together different parts of the community, but never did we imagine that it would do so to such an extent.

“It’s great to see so many people stepping forward to take part and I am looking forward to hearing everyone in full voice singing this special song on the day.”

Hundreds of people are expected to line the streets and take part in the colourful procession, which will start at Whitley Bay Metro station and finish at the Spanish City Plaza, where there will be a circus arena, live music and street performers, including some of the region’s most exciting artists entertaining the crowds.

Words to the song will be available from Whitley Bay Big Local Facebook page for anyone wanting to join in.

Lovely Day in Whitley Bay – Song Lyrics

Children are smiling, families having fun

Sandcastle building, paddling in the sea,

It’s a great place to be

Seagulls fly over, dogs are running on the beach

All we need is a little bit of sun and some ice cream

Gonna have a lovely day, we’re going to Whitley Bay

Gonna have a lovely day, we’re going to Whitley Bay
