a health trust has been named among the best in the country for cancer care.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been rated fourth best in the country following a survey of cancer patients at more than 160 NHS trusts.

That rating tops the sixth place the trust claimed after a similar survey last year of how patients feel about their care and treatment.

Trust chief executive Jim Mackey said: “Delivering a first-class patient experience is a top priority for us, and we’re delighted that the people we’ve looked after with cancer have given us such excellent feedback.

“We know that the overall experience people have when they are in hospital can impact greatly on their health and wellbeing, recovery and how well they cope once back in the comfort of their own home.

“Taking the extra time and effort to provide good-quality information, emotional support and practical help, alongside world-class medical care, is so important.

“These results are testament to the hard work, commitment and compassion of all our doctors and nurses caring for cancer patients every single day.

“I would like to thank each and every one of them for going the extra mile to deliver exceptional care at what can often be a particularly distressing time for patients and their families.”

The trust has specialist cancer teams at North Tyneside General Hospital in North Shields and at its Hexham, Berwick and Ashington hospitals.
