TUNNEL: Council is not involved

Following David Sarin’s letter (News Guardian, September 14), I would like to offer some clarification on his queries about the Tyne Pedestrian Tunnel.

The project is managed and funded by Tyne Tunnel. North Tyneside Council is not involved in the project and no contribution has been made to it from North Tyneside’s council taxpayers.

While this is not a project being delivered by North Tyneside Council, I do keep an active interest in the project’s delivery. In fact, I personally visited the Tyne Tunnel this month and can provide your readers with the following update.

There have been substantial delays due to the original contractor, GB Building Solutions, going into administration and the discovery of materials containing asbestos in the tunnel, which took 18 months to remove. These works were completed in January and the refurbishment is now fully under way.

The tunnel is expected to re-open again in spring 2018.

I hope your readers will find this information useful.
