A school’s council held its final meeting of the year in grand surroundings.

Cullercoats Primary School’s council held its last gathering of the school year in the old council chamber at Wallsend Town Hall last Thursday.

The children – two from each class from Year 1 to Year 6 – had been elected as class representatives, attending half-termly meetings to raise issues that concern their classmates.

The ‘celebration of success’ visit included a guided tour of the town hall where the children were able to see the former jail cells and magistrates’ court before holding the final meeting in the council chamber.

Year 5 teacher Jane Mearns said: “The children got the opportunity to examine three ceremonial maces brought to the town hall for the occasion.

“The parents of the school councillors were invited to take part in the tour and were then able to watch the school council meeting from the public gallery.”

Officials from North Tyneside Council were also invited to watch the meeting.

Year 5 councillor Josh Harrison opened the meeting with a statement of welcome to the town hall.
