An award-winning festival will be screening again this summer as it marks its fifth anniversary.

Whitley Bay Film Festival is taking place from August 12 to 25 with movies being shown at a variety of locations.

It will start at Tynemouth’s Grand Hotel with a celebration of Laurel and Hardy’s visit to the hotel in 1932 with a screening of The Music Box and excerpts from unfinished play Laurel and Hardy in Tynemouth, by the late Tom Hadaway.

Quadrophenia, with special guest director Franc Roddam, will be shown at the Playhouse Whitley Bay, while other venues include the Rendezvous Café, Avalon Bar, St Mary’s Lighthouse, The Northumbria School of English and the Jam Jar Cinema.

The festival finale is a large-scale open air screening of Grease on the newly created Spanish City Plaza.

Lucy Harland, co-director of the festival, said: “This year we have had a great number of people wanting to get involved, contacting us and offering to host and organise events for us. We are pleased with how the programme has developed. We hope audiences will enjoy it.’
