Victim of alleged hit and run death is named

A man killed in an alleged hit and run accident has been named by police.

John Robert Gibson, of the Palmersville area, was found at the roadside at 7.15am on Sunday, November 2.

The body of the 28-year-old was found on Kings Road North, near to the entrance of the Rising Sun Country Park in Wallsend.

Paramedics attended and confirmed the death.

Four men – aged 20, 22, 23 and 24 – have been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving and are still in custody helping with enquiries.

Officers have been in the Wallsend area making extensive enquiries and providing reassurance to people.

Chief Inspector Jerry Pearson, said: “We’re carrying out enquiries in order to establish how the man came to be on the roadside and at the this time believe he may have been hit by a vehicle.

“Officers are in the area to carry out enquiries, and also offer reassurance to residents who may be concerned.

“If anyone has been Wallsend over the past few hours and saw anything out of the ordinary, or any vehicles that appeared to be damaged we would ask them to contact us.”
