A shopping centre is preparing for a Viking invasion next week.

Vikings will be running wild and Saxons with swords as part of the children’s activities planned for the Beacon centre in North Shields.

The workshops are being run by Archaeosoup Productions and take place from Tuesday, July 23, to Saturday, July 27, starting at 10am.

Marc Bartman-Astles, of Archaeosoup Productions, said: “This is a way in which children can learn about the past and have fun at the same time.

“We’ve got weapons and shields, as well as ancient artefacts to hold and touch, and the workshops explain how we all used to live, fight and farm 1,000 years ago.”

Chris Wilson, manager of the Beacon Centre, said: “We wanted to provide something for the first week of the holidays, which is certainly not like school, but will helps kids understand horrible history. We’re looking forward to it.”
