A teenage volunteer has won a prestigious national award for volunteering.

Jonny Todd began volunteering in Barnardo’s shop in Park View, Whitley Bay, as a 14-year-old under the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme.

Now the 16-year-old, of West Allotment, has been named the Marsh Trust Young Retail Volunteer of the Year for his work on the shop at weekend.

Jonny said: “It was a great experience, going down to London to collect the award.

“It was really worthwhile meeting other volunteers and people who work for Barnardo’s from around the country.”

Manager Donna Jarvis said: “Even after he completed his Duke of Edinburgh work, he remained with us as a committed volunteer.”

“He is a dedicated, loyal and very hard working young man. Always smart and with a cheery disposition. He’s an ambassador for young people and always strives to support those older and younger than him. He is a keen team player and a load of fun. There’s never a dull moment around him.

“Jonny currently serves with the Sea Cadets and is joining the Navy early next year, which, although we’ll be sorry to see him leave us, will be a fantastic future for him.”
