A WHITLEY Bay man has been nominated for a lifetime achievement accolade at this year’s Specsavers Guide Dog of the Year Awards.
John Goldfinch, chairman of the Whitley Bay and Alnwick branches of Guide Dogs, will find out whether he has won at a ceremony being held today in London.
The 71-year-old has helped raise tens of thousands of pounds for the charity over the last 25 years.
He said: “When I found out that I had been shortlisted for the lifetime achievement award, I was thrilled.”
“The guide dogs I have been partnered with have changed my life, so I think it’s important to give something back.”
Congratulating John, Richard Leaman, Guide Dogs’ Chief Executive, said: “All our volunteers do exceptional work, but this award celebrates longstanding dedication to Guide Dogs.
“John knows the difference a guide dog can make to a blind or partially sighted person’s life, so it’s wonderful that he has been chosen for helping others to enjoy the same freedom of movement as everyone else.”
