ALLOTMENT owners are being warned to be on their guard against thieves.
The warning comes after a burglary and three thefts were reported in the space of three days at Whitley Bay’s Alder Grove allotments.
The thefts were carried out between 8pm on Sunday, January 8, and 2pm on Tuesday, January 10.
Locks were cut at three sheds and some of the sheds’ contents appeared to have been disturbed.
However, the only items that appear to have been stolen are the metal locks themselves and their fittings.
Inspector Jim Gray, pictured, of Whitley Bay’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “Officers are investigating these incidents and are appealing for help from the public.
“We’d also ask allotment owners to keep a watchful eye out and report any suspicious behaviour around the allotments and to make sure they keep the entry gate locked at all times to deter intruders.
“Police are carrying out inquiries in the area and are increasing patrols to prevent further offences.”
Potential witnesses, or anyone able to help police track down the culprits, are asked to call police on 101 ext 69191 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
