About three years ago we decided to move north to be nearer our growing family and because we thought it would be a good place to live.
Eventually we settled in Whitley Bay and have had no cause to regret the decision.
It is a very pleasant place to live. It has all the amenities we need as well as a lovely beach with its back drop of St Mary’s Lighthouse.
The Waves Leisure Centre, Whitley Bay Playhouse, library, numerous cafes and restaurants, public transport links, shops, coastal and countryside walks, interesting history, friendly people ... the list goes on.
Of course there are the run down areas, but these are common to all British seaside resorts.
However, judging by the frequent letters of complaint in the News Guardian, it seems that not all residents share this view.
Perhaps my opinion as a newcomer is less informed than long time residents, but I have the experience of other places to make comparisons and it saddens me to hear so many people complaining and objecting to any change or progress.
I have just seen the impressive plans for the improvements to the coastal strip on show in the library and they look good.
Apparently there have been previous plans which have come to nothing – perhaps because there were so many objections and protest groups which delayed things.
I just hope that this time all the locals – newcomers and long standing residents alike – will support these latest plans, look at the big picture and not stand in the way of the scheme which promises to make a very nice place an even better one.
