Whitley Bay care home celebrates Pie Week

Staff and residents put some pie-d and tested recipes to the test for a special culinary event.

Bakers and fans of British culinary classics said bon a-pie-tit to British Pie Week at Earsdon Grange care home, in Wellfield, Whitley Bay.

Staff, residents and family members took part in a cook-off competition, submitting their best homemade pies and recipes which were then anonymously taste-tested and judged.

The winning star baker was Jeff Douglas, maintenance man at Earsdon Grange and two-time winner of the home’s annual Pie Week Cook-off Competition, with a steak pie. He was presented with an engraved chopping board trophy.

The event was just one in a series of pie cook-off competitions in Maria Mallaband and Countrywide Care Homes across the North East and North Yorkshire. Winners and other notable entries from each home will have their winning recipe published in a recipe book.

British Pie Week is held in the first week of March each year, this year from March 6 to 12, and is a week-long opportunity for Brits to celebrate the nation’s comfort food favourite.

Nicola Bell, manager at Earsdon Grange care home, said: “Our pie week cook-off has become a tradition that we all look forward to.

“It’s a great opportunity for our staff and our residents and their families to get together and bond over sharing food, swapping family recipes and enjoying a good time together.”
