POLICE investigating a rape in Whitley Bay are hoping a nationwide TV appeal will help trace the attacker.
The rape took place at 3.45am on Sunday, October 16, in the rear lane of Esplanade Place, behind Zync Bar.
The 29-year-old woman was with a male friend following a night out when they were approached by an unknown man who attacked the friend, knocking him out.
The offender assaulted the woman and then raped her before making off towards South Parade.
A reconstruction of the incident, along with interviews with the two victims, is being shown on BBC’s Crimewatch tonight (Tuesday, March 20) in a bid to bring in more information.
In her interview the woman victim tells of the moments leading up to the attack and her feelings afterwards, while the man she was with explains he could do nothing to help after being knocked unconscious.
Detective Inspector Paul Race from the force’s Rape Investigation Team, said: “We are still actively investigating this rape. We have followed up numerous lines of enquiry and studied hours of CCTV to find any indication as to who the offender is.
“We’re hoping that national coverage might bring forward witnesses who were visiting the north east that night and provide more information about the identity of the attacker.”
