HUNDREDS of families are expected to hit the beach this weekend as they look to build a name for themselves – or just a castle.

The annual Whitley Bay Sandcastle Competition will be taking place on Sunday, from 11am, beside the Boardwalk Café, with judging at 1pm.

Now in its fourth year, the event – organised by Whitley Bay Chamber of Trade and North Tyneside Council – attracts entrants of all ages, from toddlers to grandparents.

Chamber chairman Karen Goldfinch, said: “Last year’s competition was a fantastic day, and fun was had by everyone.

“We expect another successful competition this year, with lots more family fun to look forward to.

“Hopefully we can beat last year’s record of over 550 entries.

“Events like the sandcastle competition really are a great way to make the most of our beautiful coastline here in North Tyneside.”
