The 22-year-old woman was walking south along George Road, Wallsend, when she was approached from behind by an unknown man near the junction with Philliphaugh.

He pushed her to the ground and sexually assaulted her, touching her over her clothing, before making off.

The woman was shocked by the incident but otherwise unhurt.

Officers have been investigating the incident, which happened at 5.50pm on Friday, March 3, and making house to house enquiries in the area.

Neighbourhood Inspector Mark Storey said: “We know these type of incidents do cause concern in the community and we have had officers in the area carrying out enquiries.

“We’re appealing for help from the public to identify the offender for this incident and are asking for anyone with information to contact officers.

“In particular we’d like to hear from the occupants of the light coloured car who may have witnessed the incident.

“We want to reassure people this does appear to be an isolated incident in this area and we are continuing to investigate the matter.”
