A WOMAN was raped in a back lane of Whitley Bay after she and a man she was with were beaten up in the early hours of Sunday morning.
The 29-year-old was with a male friend, and following a night out they were approached by an unknown man who attacked her friend, knocking him out.
The man assaulted the woman and then raped her.
The incident is said to have taken place around 3.45am on Sunday, October 16, in the rear lane of Esplanade Place, behind Zync Bar.
The attacker, who made off in the direction of the promenade, is described as white, around 26 to 27-years-old, approximately 5ft 9ins tall and of chubby build with dark brown, shaggy hair.
He was wearing a dark blue hoody with writing on it and dark blue jeans and spoke with a local accent.
Police are appealing for anyone who was in the area and who may have seen or heard anything suspicious to contact them.
Chief Inspector Steve Readdie, of North Tyneside Area Command, said: “I’d like to reassure the community that we’re doing everything we can to find whoever is responsible and extra officers will be on patrol in the area.
“I’d urge anyone who may have any information to contact police.”
The victims suffered minor injuries in the assaults and did not receive hospital treatment, however, they were left shaken by the incident.
