Work is under way on a new car park at a North Tyneside coastal location.

The car park will feature more than 100 spaces, including eight accessible bays.

It has been earmarked next to the Spanish City Dome and Plaza on Whitley Bay’s seafront.

It is being created on land just south of the Carlton Bingo building, which is currently being used for informal parking by bingo players and visitors.

The work is expected to take around 12 weeks to complete and be ready in time for the summer.

The council said the new car park will create more spaces at the coast, which were reduced after a care home was built on the former Eastbourne Gardens car park.

And motorists were left struggling to find spaces on Whitley Bay’s seafront over the Easter holidays when the warm weather and funfair at the Links saw hundreds of families and visitors head to the coast.

North Tyneside Council secured funding from the Coastal Communities Fund to finance the £600,000 car park scheme.

The work is being carried out by Capita on behalf of North Tyneside Council.
