Work is progressing to give a Metro station a fresh new look.
Newly-elected Cullercoats councillor Karen Lee has been running a campaign to refresh the town’s station.
DB Regio, which operates the Metro system, has been working to repaint and refresh the station, including the column bases, concourse and ticket areas on both platforms, and bins, benches and signage.
Karen said: “It’s brilliant to see the work that we have campaigned for has now been undertaken.”
Chewing gum has been removed and Corex panels will soon be fixed to the windows of the adjacent unit, which will be a blank canvas for a forthcoming art project.
Karen added: “We are looking to work with kids in the community to produce Cullercoats heritage-themed artwork for the station.”
“While the platform heights relative to the trains on platform two still need to be corrected, overall the station looks a lot fresher and I’m delighted with the result.
“Some residents have raised concerns that public money should be spent on fixing the pavements, and I agree. These improvements are the contractors’ obligation, and the facelift is not therefore reliant upon public money.
“Thank you to Nexus and DB Regio for getting this actioned.”
