A group of youngsters from the Far East have been soaking up local culture as part of a special visit.

The 26 children from Taiwan arrived in Whitley Bay as part of The Starlight Goodwill Ambassadors scheme.

Accompanied by four adults, the nine to 12-year-olds have been studying lessons at Northumbria School of English in the town.

They have also seeing what the region has to offer, visiting St Mary’s Island and lighthouse, playing rounders on the beach and enjoying ice creams at De Meo’s. They are also planning a visit to Alnwick Castle.

The youngsters will perform a selection of folk tales at Whitley Bay Library at 3pm on Thursday, August 13.

Christine Goodwin, principal at Northumbria School of English, said: “This is the first time we’ve had a group from Taiwan and we are delighted to welcome this enthusiastic, energetic and eager group of youngsters to our school.”

“It gives us all a wonderful opportunity for cultural exchange.”
