A picnic bench has been donated to a Whitley Bay school for use by pupils.

The bench was handed over to Whitley Lodge First School by Whitley Lodge Community Spirit, a not-for-profit group set up to promote the area.

The group includes shops, businesses, schools and churches, and is supported by North Tyneside Council.

Canon Sue Hart, a minister at St Mary’s the Virgin Church, Monkseaton, who chairs Community Spirit, said: “The school is an important part of community life and we are delighted to make a gift which the children can enjoy.’’

Head teacher Fiona Lutman said: “We really appreciate the gift of the picnic bench and value our association with the Whitley Lodge Community Spirit group.”
