FOUNTAIN: Explaining application

editorial image

I write in response to the letter from B Tunnard seeking clarification about why planning applications are being made for works that are under way on the Northern Promenade in Whitley Bay, (News Guardian, February 9).

I can confirm that it is a Listed Building Consent application to repaint and carry out minor repairs on the Coronation Drinking Fountain on the Northern Promenade. We have to apply for special permission to do this as the fountain is a Grade II listed structure.

Special permissions like this have to be made separately from the wider regeneration plans, which have already received planning permission.

The ongoing works at Northern Promenade, which began in August, are progressing well and will give the area a huge lift and a fresh look. They are the latest in a series of exciting projects supporting the regeneration of Whitley Bay.
