LITTER: A national problem

editorial image

I completely agree with Mr Hall in his views about litter, (News Guardian, February 2).

I would add to this and suggest that society as a whole is failing to protect our environment.

After almost every public gathering, be it a sporting occasion, visit to the cinema, day out at the seaside, etc, litter is always left.

We like to blame the youngsters for this, but that is far from the truth.

Why are the British becoming one of the untidiest nations on the planet? We cannot blame lack of education. Lack of pride, respect and discipline, which shows itself in other aspects of our behaviour, is the root cause. Other countries can control this problem so why not us?

For those who would like to experience a litter free environment, take a walk through Holywell Dene, where those of us who look after it are proud of our surroundings.
