A LOCAL teacher has won a national award for his work in getting more youngsters involved in cricket.
Richard Stephenson, a teacher at Spring Gardens Primary School, picked up the national Teacher of the Year award at the Chance to Shine annual dinner held at The Oval Cricket Ground, in London.
He beat off competition from teachers from 1,800 other schools and was recognised for his work in organising cricket within the North Tyneside area both between schools and within Spring Gardens while also establishing links with schools in India.
Richard, of Whitley Bay, was overwhelmed when he realised he had won.
"I was completely amazed to hear my name being read out as the winner, having just been happy to be nominated as the Northern Regional Winner," he said.
"Hearing my wife Odessa's cheers made it all the more special.
"I loved sport in spite of my limited abilities as a child and as a teacher I have only ever wanted to get as many children involved in playing sport as possible.
"Winning the national award has made all the hard work worthwhile.
"When the Chance to Shine scheme arrived in our school it was a godsend.
"The teachers have loved Rebecca Ayton leading their cricket sessions.
"As non-PE specialists they have learnt a lot and the children have benefited from her excellent coaching alongside her friendly and positive manner."
Tynemouth Cricket Club chairman Russell Perry, the club whom Richard links with as part of the scheme, said: "Richard is a really enthusiastic and dedicated teacher.
"He is the type of guy we all look back on when we reflect on our school years and ponder why we got enthused about sport."
Stephen Baines, Spring Gardens headteacher, added: "Richard is passionate about sport, and this passion spills over in to a desire to make sure all our children get as many opportunities to take part in sport as possible.
"He offers an excellent role model to the young people he teaches and coaches."
