A FORMER striker now living in North Tyneside has been honoured by the Scottish club where he made his name – and set numerous records.
Ken Bowron is regarded as a hero among the older fans at Berwick Rangers after scoring the highest number of goals in a season for the club, and helping them reach a League Cup semi-final.

And to mark his achievements he was guest of honour at the club's division two game against Ayr United at the weekend.

Ken was presented to hundreds of fans during the half-time break, receiving a warm welcome.

He was also presented with a current strip by club representatives and also made an appearance in the match-day programme.

Ken, who now lives in Church Close, Monkseaton, was surprised to see his whole family at the game joining in the celebrations.

"There was about 500 people there," said Ken.

"A lot of the older ones remember me and there was a good volume of applause. I was most gratified.

"I thought a few people would give a few shouts but the whole ground rose to applaud me.

"I also met quite a few people I'd known during my playing days up there."

During his time with Berwick, Ken scored 50 goals in one season – grabbing the milestone goal in the last match of the 1963-64 season, an achievement which has never been beaten.

In his biggest achievement with the Borderers, he helped Berwick reach a cup semi final against Glasgow Rangers, who at the time were full of Scottish internationals, scoring Berwick's only goal in a 3-1 defeat at Hampden.

After two-and-a-half years with Berwick, he was sold to Workington – who at the time were in the old third division of the English league – before moving back to Berwick 18 months later, finishing with a record of 116 goals in 138 games.

He retired from football a year later to concentrate on his career as a lecturer at South Tyneside College until he retired in 1990.

Ken had been spotted by Berwick scouts playing for Whitley Bay, where he scored 38 goals in 36 games.

"I still look out for the Whitley Bay and Berwick results," added Ken.
