NORTH Shields Hockey Club continued their encouraging build up to the new season with 4-0 and 4-2 wins against Tynedale sides at the weekend.
The first XI should be happy with their efforts. Goals from Adam Lough, Billy Sowter, Dan Jones and Chris Brunton sealed the win.

Mark Styles' tackling at the back, Lough's link up play and Mark Harrison and Dan Jones' work rates were key features.

Kieran Conway filled in well at left back and Brunton's goal was just reward for another good performance.

The second XI were stunned by a first minute Tynedale opener but after 20 minutes had turned the deficit into a 3-2 lead.

Lough featured here, opening Shields' scoring, but the real star of the show was Stephen Chater who finished a 50-yard run with a thunderbolt shot in the first half and topped this with an incredible drag flick in the second half which put daylight between the teams.

Chris Ormston got himself on the scoresheet and was one of a number of Shields youngsters who did well against more senior opposition - Stuart Booth, Jordan Bell and Ross Morton being the pick.

Off the pitch Shields have a fortnight in which to seal their top spot in the Norwich Union 'JoinOurTeam' campaign. Support continues to pour in for Shields, who are optimistic of a final vote count of more than 3,000.

Anyone interested in joining the club can contact them via northshieldshc.co.uk or just turn up at training/coaching sessions at John Spence High School on Tuesday nights from 5.30pm.
