IT IS probably a long time since local public bowling clubs were able to boast three representatives in the quarter-finals of the County Pairs (sponsored by Debmat Surfacing Ltd) but that is the happy situation this year.
Rob Self had a very comfortable win at home against Stephen Alexander of Willows while down the road at Collingwood, Stephen Miller overcame Tony Kempster (Backworth) 21-12.

Meanwhile his clubmate Simon Taws was made to sweat at Alnwick before eme
rging the winner by 17 shots to 16.

Next Thursday Rob and Simon will be at home to Robert Chisholm (Willows) and Stephen Birdsey (Backworth) respectively while Stephen travels to Willows to take on former Welsh international Kevin Wall.

There are no easy matches at this stage of county competitions but all three will have the support of all local bowlers in their efforts to reach the semi-finals.

On the county league front there was a surprise result in Clegg league division three when bottom club Newbiggin visited leaders Tynemouth.

By taking eleven of the fourteen points they not only broke a losing run of six matches but knocked Tynemouth off their perch into third place behind Rothbury and Gosforth Empire.

In the Tynemouth and District leagues things look brighter for Tynemouth who have a ten-point lead in the Daglish Cup while in the Knott Cup Crawford Park have fourteen points to spare over Collingwood.
