ALTHOUGH the Backworth bowling attack opened tidily against second placed Shotley Bridge they were unable to make an early breakthrough.
On his return from a shoulder injury Ian Stubbs was forced to withdraw from the attack on signs of a recurrence and, with Mark Cryer required to come off after seven overs due to junior limitations, Backworth found themselves short of a front line bowler.

The Shotley Bridge openers took advantage of this, with Brown scoring 75 and Collingwood 78, and with wickets in hand the Bridge were able to post an imposing total of 265–3.

In reply, the Backworth batsmen were all able to play themselves in but none were able to build a major innings.

Sumit Puri reached 30 but John Wilkinson, Paul Walker and Peter Mason all perished in the 20s.

Chris Wilkie showed a welcome return to form, in making 48, as Backworth made sure of four batting bonus points on the way to a defeat by 78 runs.

• A youthful Backworth seconds managed to restrict a strong Shotley Bridge team to 210–9 with Adam Black taking 3-22 on his seasonal debut and Chris Walker 3-40.

Despite a promising start from Michael Race and Nick Rudd, Backworth only managed 122 all out.
