WEST Allotment Celtic are looking at the positives despite opening their pre-season campaign with a 3-0 defeat at Ebac Northern League division one side Billingham Synthonia.
Allotment were left to rue two glorious goalscoring opportunities they missed minutes before the second and third goals went in.
Manager Paul Stoneman used the match to run an eye over the large number of new players that have joined last year’s squad for pre-season training.
More than 40 talented players attended Allotment’s first open training session at the start of July, showing that Stoneman and his coaching team will have a lot of decisions to make before their first competitive game of the season in the FA Cup at home to Yorkshire side Selby Town on Saturday, August 11.
Stoneman was clearly delighted with the open training session.
He said: “I am very happy with the way things are shaping up and the trials have been a huge success.
“We had 42 players at the first session, which is more than we expected really, and I’m pleased that included most of last season’s players.”
Allotment point to the training session as signs of a revival after a difficult couple of seasons for the club.
Commercial manager Jonny Thompson said: “We were absolutely delighted at the number of players at our first training session, it is a real boost to the club and shows how highly thought of West Allotment Celtic is with so many players wanting to represent the club.
“While Paul works on the squad, the committee are hard at work making sure that we have the right support from the local community and local businesses for 2012-13 to be a very successful season for the club.
“We are currently on the look out for a local business to sponsor the players’ training wear so that when the team walk out against Selby Town in the FA Cup, and for every other game this season, they look professional and know that they have the full support of the local area.”
