NORTH Shields Crusaders beat Houghton Bears in a home fixture in the county league on Saturday.
It was top versus third with the Crusaders looking to gain revenge for a defeat earlier in the season at Houghton.
Gareth Ruddle returned to the side in the back row alongside Alex Fraser and Tony Lion. Tony Hansen came in at scrum-half and Simon Morgan started on the bench.
Crusaders got off to a fast start when Barry Elliot scored an early try and Jack Jeffrey added the conversion.
Next up was a try for winger Matty Dockey in the corner to make it 12-0, and before half-time Elliot scored his second to give Crusaders a 17-0 interval lead.
The first score of the second half was a penalty from Jeffrey before Houghton opened their account with an uncoverted try to make it 20-5.
Crusaders made use of their bench and made several changes with Simon Morgan coming on to score a try to extend the hosts advantage to 25-5.
The final points of the afternoon came from Houghton who scored a converted try making the final score 25-12.
Man of the match was awarded to Alex Fraser and Crusaders have now won their last five league matches.
This weekend they look to extend the run when Seghill Deputies are the visitors to Preston Playing Fields, kick-off 3pm.
