Cullercoats FC bounced back from two league defeats in a come from behind win against Newcastle Uni on Saturday.

The game was played at pace from the start with both teams pressing, and it was the undergraduates who took an early lead after six minutes.

They extended their advantage shortly afterwards with a looping header to make it 2-0 as they made the early running.

Cullercoats continued to press forward and pulled a goal back on the half hour when a free kick from left midfielder Christopher Connor was dispatched inside the area by attacking midfielder Andrew McClay.

The home side were level minutes later when striker Daniel Iredale, on his returning debut, drilled in a left wing cross with an excellent first time shot to make it 2-2 at the break.

The home team took an early second half lead when a cross into the box was dispatched at close range by midfielder Ethan Logan-Ross to complete a superb comeback.

The Cullercoats defence came under pressure as the undergraduates pressed for an equaliser, but the home team defended resolutely, supported by another first class performance from their young keeper David Cooper to hold out and win the game 3-2.

The two teams do it all again on Saturday in the first round of the Bay Plastics Combination Cup at Links Avenue, Cullercoats. Kick-off is at 2pm.
