Cullercoats finished their extended Northern Alliance first division home campaign with a narrow defeat to Hexham on Saturday.

They made all the early running and eventually opened the scoring on 25 minutes when striker Jake Newstead broke clear and fired over the advancing keeper to make it 1-0.

Hexham struck back four minutes later to level the game 1-1 at the break.

Cullercoats substitute Alan O’Donnell, restored the home side’s lead early in the second half with a first time strike into the bottom left corner of the net from an excellent cross.

But the visitors again levelled on the break and then scored the crucial winner on 70 minutes to make the final score 3-2 to the away side.

Cullercoats complete their league campaign away to Newcastle University on Wednesday. They then have a busy close season ahead, with open trials commencing on Wednesday, June 1.
