North Shields opened the 2016-17 campaign in frustrating fashion with a 0-0 draw with Jarrow Roofing in the FA Cup extra preliminary round.

On a blisteringly hot afternoon on Tyneside, the Robins just could not make the breakthrough despite dominating possession and creating a few good chances.

The fans were out in force as always at the Daren Persson Stadium, with 276 in attendance.

The Robins’ starting XI included a few absences with Dean Holmes and Craig McFarlane, not being able to shake of injuries, whilst Gary Ormston, Ryan Donnison and Sean McCafferty were unavailable.

The first incident saw the referee being called into action in the seventh minute as ex-Whitley Bay Striker Paul Chow collided with Kyle Hayes, making his competitive debut, however, Packer felt it was too early to show Chow a card.

Hayes gingerly regained his feet and the game took a few minutes to restart, without Hayes needing to be replaced.

The first save came from the Roofing keeper Jennison, who saved well from Lee Mason, who put pressure on the Roofing defence and robbed the ball, before seeing his shot tipped over in the 18th minute.

The resulting corner was swung in and only half cleared as the ball fell to the Robins skipper, Kevin Hughes, who could only send his half volley narrowly wide of the mark.

As the game approached the half hour mark, a poor tackle on Brad Brooking gave the Robins a free kick about 30 yards from goal and the first yellow card. The free kick, however, came to nothing.

Jarrow finally mustered a shot at goal nine minutes before the break as Shields failed to deal with a run, but the shot lacked any punch as Hayes watched it go wide of his far post.

Less than 30 seconds later Gareth Bainbridge broke into the box, but could not find the on-rushing Richardson.

The second half saw North Shields continue to dominate, with Jarrow Roofing only committing forward on odd occasions.

A free kick from Richardson in the 55th minute and a shot by Mason in the 83rd minute both went wide and failed to trouble Jennison.

The game’s big talking point came in the 90th minute as Chow again brought himself to the referee’s attention by scything down McKeown. The referee brandished a yellow to the disappointment of some home fans, and McKeown was carried off, leaving the Robins with ten men for the four minutes added time.

Shields though are still in the cup and will replay on Tuesday night at the Boldon Sports Ground for the right to play Morpeth Town.
