THE result was settled by half-time when North Shields FC played host to Ryton and Crawcrook Albion in midweek.
They lead by four goals and Paul Gordon went on to complete a hat-trick in the second half.
When Holmes was felled in the box by keeper Alex Curran in the fourth minute, up stepped Keith Douglas to bury the spot kick.
Ryton included former Shieldsmen Graham Wilson in their starting line-up and three ex-Robins, Ross Atkinson, Ryan Arnott and Matthew Wade, on the bench.
But the visitors were taken apart by a rampant Robins outfit,
Curran did well to save from Douglas, Holmes and Kevin Hughes before he had to pickthe ball out of the back of the net again on 34 minutes with Douglas slotting in a Gordon pass.
Gordon, prolific in pre-season games, has only just been able to return to the fray and notched his first competitive goals of the campaign with a diving header then a tap-in, both at the far post as the Robins turned on the style to romp into a four-goal lead.
Adam Rowntree pulled one back for Ryton on the 52nd minute mark, but man of the match Gordon notched a superb third goal with a dink over the keeper to quell any suggestion of a comeback from the visitors.
