North Shields Athletic returned to winning ways in the Northern Alliance Challenge Cup after losing to Red House Farm 4-0 the previous weekend.
Saturday’s cup game at Seaton Delaval saw both teams giving their all but Athletic came out winners 3-2.
Both teams had good chances to open the scoring, but it was Athletic who took the lead when a Sean Millington corner was headed in by leading goal scorer Scott Jasper.
Athletic had a couple of more chances to increase their lead, but Delaval came back and levelled the scoreline when Karl Nealings-Lazarri placed the ball out of the reach of Athletic keeper Sean Korsbo.
The second half started with Athletic pressing and moving the ball around smoothly and a second goal came when Jasper scored his and Athletic’s second.
Delaval had a couple of chances but Korsbo in goal was having a good game. Then there was controversy about Delaval’s second goal when a defender headed the ball out for a corner and the referee gave a goal kick, which was quickly taken and in the confusion the ball found its way to Matthew Bailey to level the score.
Sean Millington scored Athletic’s third and winning goal after jinking into the box and putting the ball in at the near post.
Both teams face each other again this Saturday in the league and with both teams playing attractive football it should be another good game.
