Against all the odds Whitley Bay recorded a well merited victory over third placed Jarrow Roofing at Hillheads on Tuesday night.
Injuries and unavailability left the Bay side under strength, but they bounced back from three successive defeats to play with more freedom than in recent weeks and put the smiles back on the faces of the loyal fans who braved the wet conditions.
Peter Watling put Whitley ahead in the 17th minute with a close range header from Robbie Bird’s cross.
Less than a minute into the second half they doubled their lead following a foul on Bird on the left edge of the Jarrow penalty area. David Berry’s free kick took a deflection as it flew into the net past keeper Andrew Hunter.
Roofing responded with former Bay Reserves striker Malcolm Morien firing in a 15-yard shot that crashed off the underside of the bar before crossing the line.
Both sides created chances in an entertaining second period but with their defence looking much more disciplined than in recent games, Whitley held on for a morale boosting victory.
