Going into Saturday’s game against Killingworth Station, North Shields Athletic, had won both of their first two Northern Alliance premier division games.
They defeated Whickham and Walker Central, the latter 4-1 on Wednesday with goals from Anthony Errington, Craig Boyle, John Wyres and Scott Jasper.
Saturday’s game was again played in a strong wind which Killingworth used to their advantage, and after a couple of chances they scored the opening goal after Athletic struggled to clear.
Both teams were struggling to play proper football in the conditions and Killingworth doubled their lead after 35 minutes,
Athletic created their first real chance just before half-time but the shot did not cause the Killingworth goalkeeper any worries.
The second half started with the strong wind now behind Athletic’s back and they got back into the game after a Steve Ardley throw deceived everybody and took a deflection and wrong footed the Killingworth keeper.
The home side pressed for an equaliser which came when Sean Millington scored Athletic’s second.
A mix up in midfield saw Killingworth break and win a corner which again was not cleared and they scored to make it 3-2 and all Athletic’s hard work seemed to be for nothing.
But the scoring was not over when Luke Molley broke down the right, beat the right back and an inch perfect cross found the head of Scott Jasper and he scored Athletic’s third and his fifth of the season.
Athletic play Hebburn Reyrolle away on Wednesday and the start they have had with seven points out of nine is their best start for a few seasons.
