This Saturday, Percy Main Amateurs and North Shields will meet at Purvis Park to contest the annual Gary Hull Memorial Trophy.
It will be the 12th holding of the game in memory of The Villagers’ former treasurer and committee member.
Always an eagerly awaited event on the local football calendar, the match is likely to attract a large crowd as Main and Robins face each other for the seventh time, with the Northern League side having emerged victorious during the previous six, although extra time and penalty kicks have been need to settle the tie on previous occasions.
The match will kick-off at 3pm – a souvenir programme is to be produced and admission is £2 (concessions £1).
Percy Main have been training hard since June 21 and are likely to field a few additions to last season’s squad.
Among them are teenagers Adam Green and Jake Stephenson, who have shown great potential, Dave Surrey, a tenacious midfielder who figured for Chester-le-Street last season, Graham Allen, formerly of Cullercoats, and centre forward Joe Betts, a proven goal scorer who will bolster the team’s attacking options no end.
Although Percy Main lost their last friendly 2-0 against Northern Alliance newcomers Lindisfarne CP on a baking hot afternoon last Saturday, there were encouraging wins over Alliance premier division sides Gateshead Rutherford (1-0) and Wallington (7-3) during the team’s previous run outs with all of the squad players being given game time at some time or other.
Surrey hit the match winner against Rutherford with a glorious 25-yard effort, while Betts (2) Stephenson, Ant Ridley, Ryan McKee, Gareth Armstrong and an own goal accounted for Wallington.
