North Shields ended their first season back in the First Division in fourth spot only five points behind Marske United in one of the most exciting title races for many years.

The Robins finished with 85 points – as manager Graham Fenton enthused, probably 25 more than their pre-season expectations.

Shields ended their league campaign midweek out west at Celtic Nation and in a bruising encounter.

A crisp Dean Walker strike set up by a Denver Morris sublime through ball on 70 minutes was enough to secure the three points.

With regular keepers Michael Robinson and Chris Bannon both injured Shields handed the gloves to defender Curtis Coppen and he was not to be beaten.

This was to be already relegated Celtic Nation’s last game as they have decided to resign from the league.

Shields peppered the home goal with Michael McKeown twice thwarted by fine saves by the home custodian.

North Shields: Coppen, Donnison, Grey, McKeown, Parker, Hughes (Elliott 71), Morris, Wrightson, Walker, Luccock (Richardson 50), Holmes (Carr 32). Subs (not used) Lancaster, Bainbridge.
