After claiming the scalp of Evo-Stik premier side Blyth Spartans, the Robins followed up by defeating Northern League first division outfit Team Northumbria, bouncing back to overturn a two-goal deficit.
New acquisition Gareth Bainbridge bagged a second successive brace with a majestic 20-yarder then coolly converting a spot kick awarded after a John Grey cross had been handled.
With ex-West Auckland man John Parker in commanding form at the back Shields finished the stronger and were rewarded with a late winner as Grey notched his second goal of the campaign, sweetly nodding in a Ben Richardson corner at the near post to stun the students.
Lacking a number of regulars and recent signings the Shieldsmen fielded a trialist in goal and another in defence.
The other nine starters who represented the Robins being Jack Donnison, John Parker, John Grey, Ben Richardson, Adam Forster, Kieran Wrightson, Phil Robinson, Dean Walker and Bainbridge with stalwart Marty Graham one of two substitutes used.
This Saturday North Shields welcome Scottish non-league side Beith to the Daren Persson Stadium at Ralph Gardner Park.
The North Ayrshire team Beith Juniors were West of Scotland premier division champions in 2010 and the following year reached the third round of the Scottish Cup before bowing out to Airdrie after a replay.
Last season they finished 11th in the table, were relegated, and will compete in the SJFA West Super League first division in the coming campaign.
Saturday’s match will kick off at 2pm.
