THE Robins qualified for the second round of the Brooks Mileson Memorial League Cup and a home tie with Darlington RA with a 2-1 win at Brandon United, their first knockout success of the campaign.
Full-back Danny Iredale came in for his debut.
Robbie Livermore gave a good account of himself in a lively first half whilst Craig Deighton had claims to be credited with both of his side’s goals.
Shields had the incentive of a fifth minute strike by Deighton and should have been out of sight by half-time.
Luccock was continually tormenting the home rearguard but the Tynesiders’ only other reward came after 26 minutes following a goalmouth scramble resulting from a Luccock cross.
Livermore’s drive was deflected over, Luccock cut in to rifle wide and Wilkinson twice saved from Deighton with Robinson’s only moment of concern occurring when he was forced to save at full stretch from Lewis Wing.
The County Durham outfit, though, were right back in it when Ryan Redmond’s fierce effort reduced the deficit just six minutes after the turnaround.
Shields still had chances with Paul Gordon, Dunn and Dean Holmes all going close whilst Luccock struck the woodwork but in the end they were still relieved to hear the final whistle as Brandon’s late flurry almost took the tie to extra time.
