NORTH Shields Under 12s Girls team lifted the League Cup on Saturday when they beat AE Phoenix in the final.

AE Phoenix made the brighter start and pressed for the first five minutes but never troubled the North Shields goal.

Shields’ first real attack forced a throw-in deep into the Phoenix half and a long throw was fumbled by the keeper and fell into the net.

Shields soon doubled their lead when a period of pressure ended with Levi Appleby finding the corner of the Phoenix net.

Shields could have increased their lead further when great wing play by Katie Ellwood created a chance for Frankie but a last ditch tackle foiled the attempt.

Shields could have been forgiven for easing up as they had no substitutes available, but they continued to create chances.

Phoenix made a final onslaught in the last five minutes but Hannah Routledge defended like a tiger and Zoe Hornby was a rock in midfield.

Phoenix nearly got back into the game late on but once again Caitlin Ormond came to the rescue.
