Thompson treble fires TyneMet into next round

TYNEMET College hosted York College in the British Colleges Elite Cup and progressed to the next round after a 4-2 win.

The hosts were early starters and straight from the kick off Mikel Thompson crossed to Connor Thompson who saw his volley flash wide of the post.

A surging run down the right from full back Nelson Ndlovu saw him cross for Dale Pearson who saw his powerful shot rise just over the crossbar.

Connor Thompson was next to threaten the goal twice in successive minutes when he first saw his solo run and shot cannoned off the foot of the post then, following a poor clearance, his chipped effort went narrowly wide.

York’s first real chance came after 25 minutes when home keeper Dan Gladstone was forced to pull off a superb point blank save after a cross from the left found their striker.

However, TyneMet did not heed the warning and were made to pay when a similar move saw York snatch a lead against the run of play.

As the half finished, Sean Millington had a great chance following a Pearson pullback but he fired his shot over.

The tie was level just five minutes after the restart when Connor Thompson dribbled past three defenders and slotted the ball low into the far corner of the net.

On the hour mark Thompson got his second after some neat interplay, however York were not to be outdone when after 70 minutes they drew level.

TyneMet pressed for the winning goal and Jack Pinchen saw his towering header hacked off the line and James Garwood missed a golden opportunity when his close range header found the arms of the keeper.

With only five minutes left to play and the tie looking like it was going to need extra time substitute Michael Baxter checked back inside and floated a sublime left footed finish over the keeper into the back of the net.

Connor Thompson sealed victory in the final minute when he rounded off an excellent second half performance with his third goal to send TyneMet into the next round of the cup.

As a reward for their victory, TyneMet will play at home to Balby Carr from Doncaster in December.
