TyneMet progress in cup after five-star show

TyneMet gained the upper hand following a 5-0 win over East Durham in the ECFA Premier Cup to set up a second round tie with Hartlepool FE.

Both teams had a slow start before East Durham were awarded a 15th minute penalty which was well saved low down to the right by home keeper Callum Straker.

TyneMet’s Dillon Blake went close in the 20th minute with a shot from distance before they opened the scoring five minutes later with Shane Jones showing good composure to finish under pressure following Antonio Manco’s through ball.

Lewis Scorgie made it 2-0 with a powerful header from Jones’ corner and it was Jones who had the last chance of the half when he headed wide from close range.

Substitute Mikel Thompson went closest at the beginning of the second half as his shot from distance was well tipped over the crossbar by the visiting keeper.

It was Thompson who set up the next goal of the game as his superb slide rule pass found Jones who spun and powerfully finished past the helpless keeper.

The lead was extended with six minutes remaining when a cross from the right was headed goal wards by Marcus McCreedy only for Michael Baxter to nip in and head it over the line.

Baxter then made it 5-0 in the final minute taking the ball around the keeper and putting it into the empty net.
