Whitley Bay FC Womens side have made it through to the Second Round Proper of the FA Womens Cup and face a glamour home tie against Premier League team Blackburn Rovers at Hillheads on Sunday January 12.
The team beat Brighouse Ladies in the First Round in a pulsating match at Hillheads on Sunday.
The Coast side took the lead against their Yorkshire rivals with a 25 yard screamer from Julie Duggan before Brighouse equalised in the second half with a penalty.
Within minutes, Whitley had regained the lead after a superb Katie Barnes cross was powered home by the head of Catherine Shields.
Whitley clung on to the lead and were ecstatic at the final whistle.
Club Chairman Colin Phillips said: “I’m delighted with the result but particularly that the two scorers are both Whitley Bay girls and have come through the ranks of our Under 16s, Development team and then Reserves before breaking into the First team.”
Whitley Bay were pulled out the hat against Premier League side Blackburn Rovers and the tie will take place on Sunday January 12 at Hillheads.
Team manager is Dave Hooper said: “We have been unbeaten in all competitions since the beginning of September and this will be a big test for.
“We are looking forward to it and hope to cause an upset.”
